California Lutheran University Leader Named Chief Data and Analytics Officer

In his new role, John Marsteen will support the university’s long-term strategic direction.

John Marsteen, MBA, will draw on his expertise in information technology and database design and development in his new role at California Lutheran University as the chief data and analytics officer. The Cal Lutheran alum steps into the newly created position after 30 years with the university, most recently as the executive director of enrollment systems and analytics.

“We have long relied on John’s ability to be a detail-oriented leader who manages multiple projects simultaneously, while also focusing on the success of his team and the Cal Lutheran community,” Cal Lutheran President John Nunes, said. “Fine-tuning our focus on data and analytics will give us a competitive advantage — not just in innovation, but in how effectively we serve our students and fulfill our mission.”

As the chief data and analytics officer, Marsteen will build on his current position, enabling Cal Lutheran to centralize data collection across multiple departments for a more robust analytics platform. He and the functional leaders across the university will drive strategic decision-making using the robust qualitative and quantitative findings.

Marsteen graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Cal Lutheran in 1995 and received his MBA in 2005. He started at the university in 1996 as the manager of prospect research and database services, later moving into enrollment systems and analytics.

He is a core team member of the 2025-26 retention, attainment and success committee, which focuses on identifying short- and long-term approaches for student success.

Throughout his Cal Lutheran tenure, Marsteen has been instrumental in driving enrollment insights and related budget projections, helping lead the evolution, integration and administration of the University’s Slate enterprise customer relationship manager and related data platforms supporting admissions, financial aid, academic services and the broader student experience.
